While most keto desserts are fairly hit or miss, this recipe is a hit every time I make it. This Low Carb Chocolate Chip Mug Cake Recipe takes less than 5 minutes to whip up, and it’s super easy to make!
Sometimes at the end of the day, you just need a quick little sweet treat. And on a low carb diet, making desserts can be a bit of a pain at times.
That’s why I love this little recipe. It’s perfect for a quick craving, and it makes just the right amount of dessert when you’re at home and making a treat for a party of one.
What goes in a Low Carb Mug Cake?
Here is the short list of what you’ll need for this recipe:
- Almond Flour
- Pyure Granular Sweetener (or other keto friendly sweetener)
- Butter
- Egg Yolk
- Vanilla Extract
- Salt
- Chocolate Chips
That’s all you need to throw this little warm and tasty treat together!
How many carbs are in a mug cake?
When looking at the nutritional information on the recipe, you won’t see a place for sugar alcohols. Erythritol is a sugar alcohol found in the Pyure Granular Sweetener. In addition to fiber, sugar alcohols are to be subtracted from the total carbohydrates in order to get the net carb count.
There are 12 grams of Erythritol in this recipe, as well as 4.2 grams of fiber.
Therefore, for this recipe using the ingredients as listed, the total net carbs are 3.4 per mug cake.

Recipe Notes – Low Carb Mug Cake with Chocolate Chips
The Almond Flour
- I’ve tried using less flour, and I’ve tried using more flour in this recipe. 3 tablespoons is the sweet spot for this low carb mug cake recipe.
Pyure Granular Sweetener
- For this recipe, I’ve only ever used Pyure brand.
- Of course, you can use other granular sweeteners such as Swerve – just make sure the option you choose is low carb friendly
Butter
- As always, use real butter – not margarine. Real butter has a richer, fuller taste. It’s also recommended if following low carb / keto diets.
- Make sure that your butter is melted BEFORE you add it to your mug cake mixture. You want to make sure the butter mixes well with the other ingredients.
- To melt the butter, I usually place it in a separate small microwave safe dish, and put it in for 15-25 seconds until mostly melted. Then I stir it until it becomes a full liquid.
Egg Yolk
- Yes, you read correctly. Only use the yolk of the egg for this recipe (aka, the yellow part). You can discard the egg white, or use it in another recipe / dish.
- I tried making the mug cake with the egg white before, and I wasn’t a fan of the consistency.
Vanilla Extract
- For this recipe, 1/4 of a teaspoon seemed to be the perfect balance. If you use too much vanilla extract, it can become overpowering and a bit off-putting. Too little, and you don’t get the vanilla taste.
- I’ve used a homemade vanilla extract, and also a popular brand name store bought vanilla extract as well. The recipe turned out about the same for both.
The Chocolate Chips
- As you can see pictured above, I used some dark chocolate chunks from Aldi that turned out to be low carb, just because I had them at home.
- Typically I use / recommend the Lily’s brand chocolate chips – they are low carb friendly, and very tasty!
About that pinch of Salt
- There’s something about a little pinch of salt in this that helps bring the whole thing together.
- Most of the time, I use sea salt instead of table salt, but just use whatever you have on hand.
